Where are the Silver Dimes??!
This week the staff is scurrying to get everything ready for our Gala and Silver Dime Service, with the help of many--as in, dozens of--volunteers. Pictured above is Carol, of last week's email--the woman in the office who helps hold it all together (and who found the dimes!). If you didn't get a ticket for Saturday, contact me at this email address. We want everyone to be included who wants to be, and by all means, don't let ticket price discourage you. We have 2 donated tickets to give away. What goes on behind the scenes of liturgy planning for a service like this? A lot. Victoria and I have been deep in our research, figuring out what liturgy, hymns, and service music would have been authentic to the period when St. James was incorporated. Additionally, a former priest here called me yesterday to make sure we were using the correct dimes to give to the Popham descendents. Apparently, he was here in the 1960s when the then-rector, the Rev. Dudley Stroup, realized that they needed pre-1965 dimes with no copper added, closer to what they would have had in 1849. Father Stroup made a panicked, last-minute rush to the Scarsdale bank to find a roll of authentic silver dimes. That's the same roll Carol just found and that we'll be using on Sunday! We've been having so much fun pulling all this together. But importantly, we think the service (and Gala) will be really meaningful, connecting us in a tangible way to the men and women who founded our church--and to each other. See you there! |
Renew & Revitalize Task Force Updateby Ocean Mills + Tuesday, September 24 [Thank you to Ocean Mills, Omaira Crane, and Warren Dodge for working with Sam Geer to keep us moving forward.] This week we are looking to formally engage the landscape architect, Sam Geer to start work on the parking lot. The expectation is to use October-December to design and draft the formal plans to be submitted to Scarsdale in January-February. March and April will be used to make any revisions and amendments from Scarsdale City planners. In April we should have the bid packages ready for release and a contractor selected by May. The goal is to break ground in June and complete the work by November. Sam Geer will travel to Scarsdale on the weekend of October 18-20 to facilitate a design session with the project leadership to review schematic design choices. This will be a chance for the design team to meet in person, verify existing site conditions relative to the survey, and provide direction on key design decisions as we begin to prepare our designs for City review. •Schematic Design Review + Issues Identification (circulation, stormwater, sanitary sewer, lighting, etc.) •Materials Selection--paving, seating, planting, etc. •Internal Review and approval of site program and layout •Presentation of preliminary designs to City staff I know it feels like a long time ago we were just exploring the idea of a capital campaign, but it worked, and we're going to start to see movement. If haven't yet had a chance to make a pledge to the campaign and are open to a visit from us, we'd love to visit with you. Campaign visits are informative, friendly, relaxed, and a great way to get to know each other. You can reach out directly to me, Ocean. I'd love to hear from you! Omills001@gmail.com. |
See You Saturday!
If you don't have a ticket, we'll find one for you so you can be included in the festivities. Contact me, Mo. Storm, by replying to this message. We have 2 donated tickets, too, so if you or anyone you know could use those, please do! A few things for our attendees to consider: •Consider taking an Uber to and from the event, since parking can get tight. •If the weather allows and you prefer not to check your coat, leave it at home (but there *will* be a coat check). •Bring your camera (phone cameras are great). We don't have an official photographer, so we're doing crowd-sourced photography. So bring your camer and act like a photographer! |
